Discover Vršac

Vršac – a charming little town

“How come I’ve never been here before?” That’s the question most people ask the first time they visit Vršac. You’ve probably heard of it—for the famous košava wind and the wine. But only when you experience them for yourself will you see just how special they are.

Vršac is unique in many ways. A flatland town crowned by a hill, with 19 bridges but no river. A place where you’ll never leave hungry—or thirsty (once a year the town keys are symbolically handed over to Vinko Lozić, the avatar of Bacchus himself).

When you come to WordCamp Vršac, the packed program won’t leave you much free time to explore all the charms of the city. Still, make the most of it—or stay a few extra days to really feel the pulse of Vršac. Stroll through its streets and admire the beautiful façades of old buildings.

Visit Sterija’s House, the Orthodox Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace, the largest Catholic cathedral in the region, and the quirky “pharmacy on the steps.” The permanent exhibition in the oldest building in Vršac will not leave you indifferent.

Make sure to climb the Hill. Stop by the viewpoint near the little chapel, visit the church of St. Theodore of Vršac, and then follow the “Health Trail” through the forest to the Tower. The city’s landmark will take you back to the times of battles between the Ottomans and the Austro-Hungarians—and you might even catch paragliders dancing in the air. Back in town, sit down at one of the cafés on the square and soak up the rhythm of city life. And don’t forget to treat yourself: try the unique išleri pastries and Banat’s poppy seed ice cream.

Oh, the food here…

Vršac’s culinary tradition, dating back to the 18th century, is a delightful blend of the nations that lived here. Serbian, Hungarian, and German cuisines all come together on the same table, promising unforgettable gastronomic experiences. Turkey with sauerkraut and cherry sauce is a must at festive occasions, alongside pumpkin stew with Wiener schnitzels, vineyard goulash… And for dessert: strudels, dumplings, and of course, poppy seed noodles.

Our recommendation? Choose one of the many local restaurants and let the chefs surprise you.

And as for drinks…

Few haven’t heard of Vršac wines. For centuries they’ve been prized across Europe, even gracing royal courts. Yet the wines of small, family-owned wineries are reserved only for the lucky few. You’re among them. All WordCamp participants will get to discover these secret delights at the Saturday night party.

Vršac also has its own craft beer brand. We suggest sampling the full Krugher & Brent lineup and finding your favorite. Whether it’s lager, red, dark, or wheat—choosing won’t be easy, but satisfaction is guaranteed.

Getting around

When locals tell you something is “far,” they mean it’s about a 15-minute walk! On the other hand, taxis in Vršac are incredibly affordable. Most rides anywhere in town cost just 150 dinars (about €1.30). So go ahead—forget your car during the conference.
